Yes, a charismatic figure and likeable chap.

Very sad news - RIP Peter.
89 . Years old . The voice of golf .
That is the end of an era, sad news indeed. I knew he had failing health and was delighted he was able to commentate from home on this year's Masters.

How I enjoyed his series on BBC - A Round With Alliss and Pro-Celebrity Golf. His sense of humour was just my cup of tea.

For once I agree wholeheartedly with John Cleese:
"Sad to hear of Peter Alliss's death

The most sane and comforting voice I ever heard

I always thought that I could cope with the ending of the world if only Peter was commentating on it"
A good golfer and a gentleman RIP.
I am in no way a fan of golf but have to agree that Peter had a voice like a cosy hug and a certain charm about him.

RIP Peter.
danny, if Peter had conquered his putting he would have been a great golfer. He had a personalised number plate "3 PUT" :)
I saw Peter Alliss play an exhibition game at North Manchester Golf Club in 1958. He was accompanied by Dai Rees, Christie O'Connor and Peter Butler, just after they had won back The Ryder Cup for GB & Ireland. A great memory. In later years, he wrote in a book that the 16th hole at our course (not North Mcr) was one of the most scenic he had played, but in my opinion he was guilding the lily a bit as we are only 4 miles from Manchester City Centre! I think he must have taken a bung off someone to write that. He was commentating on the Masters only a few weeks ago. For all his talent, he never won a major, which many people attributed to him having "the yips". For non-golfers, that means he trembled like jelly when faced with a short putt, which he missed frequently. But he'll be missed by all golfing fans, that's for sure. He was the second Henry Longhurst. RIP.
Another national treasure says goodbye.
Never wanted to play golf, but loved watching it, mainly because of PA's commentary.

An obscure fact, he used to be in the Guinness Book of Records as the heaviest birth weight baby in the country, one sec, I'll check it ...
Yep, born in Berlin, just under fifteen pounds, a European record at the time.
Wow! And I thought my brother was big, born 11 1/2 lb.
He was born in February and quipped that his mother, a small woman, couldn't ride a bike until Christmas!

RIP Peter Alliss. Thanks for the hundreds, maybe thousands, of hours of entertainment over the years!
