Have you checked your incoming port on your mail settings?
To see if it's on the correct server number?
That sound as if your outgoing (SMTP) server is properly configured but the incoming (IMAP or POP3) server isn't.

How are you accessing your emails? i.e. what type of device are you using (Android phone, iPhone, iPad, PC, laptop or whatever) and are you using webmail (accessing your emails via a web browser) or a dedicated email app and, if so, which one?
Question Author
How do I check the port? I am not at all computer savvy!
I guess then the outgoing and incoming port should both be the same?
What do I need to do to check this, please?
Thanks

I have got a desk top computer. Thanks
I'll let Chris tell you Newcastle as he can explain better than I will
The incoming and outgoing ports will (almost) never be the same.

You'll need to say what email software you're using and what device you're using it on.
Can I just ask , who's your internet provider?

I am using a fixed desktop computer
OK, so you're running Windows, right?

Once again, what software do you use to send and receive emails, and who is your email provider?
Who do you use your internet through, ie Sky, Virgin etc , ?
OK, we know that you're using a desktop computer but how do you access your emails?

Do you open a web browser (such as Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome or Firefox) and go to a website OR are you using a program, totally separate to your web browser, which is just for sending and receiving emails (such as the Windows 10 Mail app, Outlook, Outlook Express or Thunderbird)?
Perhaps your friends are trying to tell you something ;-)

It is a totally separate icon we click on which is just for our e mails.
newcastle1 what is the suffix at the end of your email address?

eg @hotmail.com or @btinternet.com @googlemail.com etc

Don't give the whole email address!
Thank you for responding.

Open the app that you're using (from its desktop icon). In the absence of any other information, I'll assume that it's the Windows 10 Mail app but the instructions below will be roughly the same with other apps too:

Look down the left hand side of the window for the name of your account. Right-click on it and select 'Account settings'. Then select 'Delete account'. (Don't worry! You're only deleting the settings for the account. You WON'T lose any existing mail!)

When you've deleted your account, go to 'Add account' and re-create your original account. That should repair the corrupt server setting.

.co.uk It is an e mail address that my brother in law did for him
What precedes .co.uk ( PLEASE DO NOT PUT FULL ADDRESS)
just @ .....co.uk
You may have exceeded your email account quota. Whoever supplies your email facility will have set a set amount of disc space for saved mail. You will either have to increase the disc space allocated or delete all those hundreds of emails that are currently locking you out. The first step, I should think, is to send an email to the account that is giving you issues. If the mailbox is full, the sender should receive a bounceback message stating that the disk space has been exceeded. Get someone you know or do it yourself if you have a back up email account to message the account. Let us know what, if any, the message is that the sender gets.

Think e mail provider might be Microsoft office?
Your email provider is the bit after the '@' symbol in your email address.
