Yes bank holiday now known as late May holiday. Used to be Whitsun bank holiday. Think it used to have been a slightly religious one to do with the Apostles of Jesus suddenly being able to speak many languages. Not sure though.

"Slightly religious"? It was initially totally based on religion. 'White Sunday' celebrated the day on which The Holy Spirit' was said to have descended upon the disciples. It was the week in which workers were given time off work from their agricultural duties and 'Whit Monday' survived until the early 70s. Still celebrated by some of our northern towns and villages with 'Whit Walks' and Morris Dancing.

It was very alive and kicking when I was a child Ken, in the days of divided towns and villages, where I grew up was predominantly Methodist and Miners, and also a strong Roman Catholic community and never the Twain did meet, how times change eh?

I remember HAVING to do the Whit Walk once or twice as a schoolkid. Hated it with a vengeance. Our school was unfortunately aligned with the church across the road and even as a youngster I was a practising atheist.

My religious friends will be missing their church time. I will be celebrating the late spring and the waxing moon . It was beautiful last night in the fading glow after sunset

Our church was Protestant, Bobbi, but i'm almost sure that the procession of junior school children consisted of all flavours of Christianity from many of the Sunday Schools in the town.

Yes, Theland, even we heathens know that. But the bank holiday was originally the Whit Bank Holiday which always came 7 weeks after Easter. However, because of the ambiguity of just when Easter falls each year, the Spring Bank Holiday date is fixed.
