When my smart TV has the firestick in, the source will automatically start on the firestick channel when I turn the TV on.

If it's not actually labelled 'Source' (or 'Src'), the source button on the remote control might be shown by a rounded rectangle with an arrow pointing into it

the word 'Input' (or 'In' or 'Inp'), a picture of a TV screen, 'Aux' (or 'Aux select') or the weird symbol shown at the top right here

It should be there somewhere though, so (as long as the one-for-all remote has been properly paired with the set) you shouldn't need an original remote control.

Thanks guys
Have you given the TV a thorough going over, fruitsald?

They hide these buttons in some peculiar places.
