Hello. My regular request for explanations I am afraid. The first is "Salt an avenging goddess put on tail of bird" I have *I*a*a*e. in my list of salts I've reduced possibilities to two: titanate and sinapate . But I don't know any avenging goddesses that fit either . Maybe there are other salts that fir?
The other clue is "Prisoner between walls of Newgate getting echo" I have *n*e*n*e. So, internee fits but where's the echo? And whilst "walls of Newgate" could be NE where do those letters fit in?

As ever if any of my heroes are on line I'd be glad of help. (Time is a bit tight as SWMBO is insisting on early bath/bed as it's the exam season)

Tit (bird) an Ate (avenging goddess)
between= INTER + NE (walls/front and back of NewgatE) + E(cho)
Inter (between) N e + e (echo)
..phonetic alphabet ^
... sorry as in phonetic alphabet E = Echo

Thank you both very much. I have just looked up Ate (never heard of her that I can remember) . As always with the greeks, interesting!. the e for echo certainly was defeating me. Now I understand. Thank you.

But,as I still have nearly a quarter of an hour, can I push my luck and ask for one more explanation please?
"provide upright support for what may become a wall?" I am pretty confident that the answer is "caterpillar". But I am not sure why
