I was hoping there was a way to reset my password without doing a reset. On most sites you can state you have lost password and you will receive a text in order to reset.
That’s a website not a piece of hardware. The password is there for security. It wouldn’t be very good security if you could somehow bypass it.

Tried that......guess reset is my only option eh?
'Fraid so !! Did you not write it down anywhere,?? Or given it to a visitor that might remember ?
There may be one other option, but it is a bit of a long shot - do you remember the computer/browser you used to change the password from the default?

It's possible that the browser remembered the password - so go to the specific computer and browser that was used originally to change the password on the router and look through the saved passwords file.

If you give us the details, we can probably guide you through that process, but you have to have access to the specific machine and browser that was used.

I have it written down but will not accept.
Unfortunately have different laptop from the one used to set up primarily. Just my luck......Just for interest, how does one look for previous passwords. Thanks to you all. Tel
Have you tried the factory password ?
telboy, when you say "password for the router" do you mean the password to connect to the WiFi network, or the password to log into the router (via the network)?

When router seems to be up and running the phone asks for my password but when I enter it I get the message “”not recognised”
Ah. then you might be able to recover the situation.

It would help to know the make and model of the r9uter. I have an old TalkTalk one that has a label in the back. Top left, it says model number HG633.

Beneath that it gives two barcodes. One is the Wirelessnetwork name. The other is the Wireless password.

We're not interested in those, because you said they were changed.

At the top middle in smaller type are four lines:

Default router settings
IP address 192.168.1.1
Ruter username: admin
Router Password: XXXXXXXXX

If you have a similar label, you may be able to log into the router and reset the wireless network password.

Procedure:

1. Ensure the router is switched on and connected to the network
2. Go to your browser and enter the IP address given (eg 192.168.1.1)
3. log in using the credentials given (admin/XXXXXXXX)
4. You will then have number of options, including re-setting the SSID and Network password.

Good luck
After you've followed those steps, "Select Maintain from the upper right corner. Select Account Management from menu on left. Under Change WEB Account Password
select Edit. Enter the details for your current and new password."

If it's only asking for a password, with no username, then I suspect it is the WiFi password you need. This is usually referred to as the "passphrase". Have you tried the default passphrase, that should be printed on the router?
Another possibility is to use WiFi Protected Setup. If the router has a button labelled "WPS", then pressing this should allow the phone to connect, within a limited time, without entering the WiFi passphrase.
