Did you not get an owner's manual with it?
Emmie is the TV able to support any of the following methods of recording? USB Recording, PVR (Personal Video Recorder), DVR (Digital Video Recorder)
if it is a player only it will not record...

To the best of my knowledge a smart TV doesn't record and a DVD player is just that a player, not a recorder.

You need a third device to record, how do you receive your signal?
On some TVs you can record directly to its hard drive and don't need a seperate player
people still play dvd's, sorry what make and model
My Smart TV has a Record button on the Remote. Does yours Em?
Many TV sets incorporate a recording facility, whereby you use a USB memory stick to keep your stored programmes on. It doesn't necessarily have to be an expensive set to offer that facility. (My £99 cheapo from Asda can do it).

DVD players won't record anything but, obviously, DVD recorders can do.

If you'll tell us the MAKE AND MODEL of each device we might be able to provide more useful answers though!

turns out i need to buy a usb external hard drive, now why couldn't the shop told me that i dont know. so its off to pc world later if the weather holds out, and buy one.
My smart tv records to a USB memory stick. It can be a bit picky, but with a 32 gig stick, fine.

had the installers in again, so that is what he told me, i am not particularly tv savvy, so they will have to come back and fix it.

thanks for all the advice by the way most helpful.
I have one, to record it is connected to a digital recording device.

tried pressing rec the record button but message says need usb or similar connector, the shop should have informed me of same, so looks like another visit there later today.
May be worth a read through this Emmie. That is why I asked the question @ 10.47 Sat.

Did you specifically tell them you wanted a tv with a built in recorder and asked their advice? If so, they should take it back and refund your money.

no i didn't, i am something of a technophobe, so don't understand the finer parts of technology. the salesman didn't suggest it, so i went off and had the tv, separate dvd player delivered paying for the installation. believing you could immediately record turned out to be untrue. so i bought a separate hard drive, freeview box, call it what you like and had to have that installed as well. costing another 200 quid, which was a bit of a surprise. still i am also having to work out how the control works, so happy days.........or not.
I'm sure you'll have no trouble getting the hang of it all, emmie.
