What was the name of the piece of equipment Acid House musicians used to create the frequency changing basslines that was an integral part of the music and I guess 'made it' Acid house?

I recall they kept it a closely guarded secret in the late 80s to stop Stock, Aitken and Waterman learning their techniques!

Boold...I am not sure but the road menders that were outside my house last week used a pneumatic drill...very similar sound.
