Windows Media Player Error - Won't play Video / Music links!

When I try to open a video / music link from a number of web sites I receive the following message:

  • Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue so I can play links from websites?

I'm sure that the real experts on AB can come up with lots of 'techie' reasons why your problem might occur. My first attempt at getting round a problem like this, however, would be to install a decent media player! (Windows Media Player is a joke - the sort of joke which used to make you laugh but you've now heard so many times it only makes you groan). Try VLC. It's open source (i.e. free) and it supports almost every media type going:
