Hi, we have recently had a brand new Sky+ HD box installed, and I am surprised that I can hear it, even when we are not actually watching anything, it makes a whirring noise, ( so mechanical, not an electrical buzzing sort of thing), and I am guessing its the hard drive spinning inside it, but I didnt expect to hear it when the unit is in standby. Is this normal for these units?

Yes it's quite normal ours does it a lot. Some of the time the thing is updating itself.
you will stop noticing it.
I posted a similar Q about 3 years ago. As people say, you'll stop noticing the cricket/frog sounds soon.
Just to contradict the others, my Sky+ HD box makes no noise whatsoever, either during playback, recording or on standby. The same with other people I know. Maybe a batch of different hard drives or fans was used in some boxes. It might be worth ringing Sky to check - they may give you a new box.
The only time ours makes a noise is when it is first switched on

Actually, after asking my question it occurred to me that it might be a cooling fan for the HDD, im just surprised its so loud! As people have said, I dont hear the clock ticking any more, so I guess this will be the same in a while.
