How did I get a call on my mobile, from a mobile number that doesnt exost

So earlier I received a call on my mobile phone, it only rang for about 3-4 seconds so I didnt get to answer it in time. So the number which my phone displayed rang was a mobile number, I tried to call it and it says "the number you have called is not recognized"... I even tried 1471 then pressed 3 and I get the same. How did I get a call from a number that does not exist?

It does't mean that it doesn't exist, it means that the person calling is a) ex directory or has b)  witheld their number, either permanantly or just for that call.

They did not withhold their number, not only did it display the number on my phone, I also got the number from dialling 1471.

If it was a call centre or marketing company they can make their numbers unobtainable it saves people calling back and saying 'someone just called me' when there could be an office of a 100 people all ringing out on that number!
