My monitor supports refresh rates up to 85hz. What's the best one to use?

You should always use the highest possible refresh rate that your graphics card and monitor can suuport at the resolution you require. For instance, if you choose to run at 1024x768, and your system is capable of running this configuration at 120Hz, you should do so. It reduces flicker and eyestrain.

As lisaj says - the higher the better that BOTH your card and monitor can support (most budget monitors will struggle to display properly at high frequencies). However for all practical purposes 85 hz will be fine. At 70 - 75 hz or less the human eye can detect a slight flickering which can be annoying. This becomes undetectable by about 80 hz.
