Nexus 7 Otg Problem

I have a Nexus 7 2013 and have been trying to use an OTG with a flash drive. I have installed Nexus Media Importer and the flash drive is configured to FAT32 but I can get no response. On the OTG troubleshooter (on the Media Importer) I get a tick for USB Host Support and OTG Detected but a X No USB Device Detected in Linux and X No USB Device Detected in Android. I'm baffled but then I am an old man. Any ideas gratefully received.
