My grandad has a laptop that has windows 8, I hate windows 8! I have no idea how to do the most simple things on it.. Usually when you open a browser window.. It's a white background, somehow this is now a black background.. But you can't see buttons to proceed, to sign in or anything.. You're literally stuck on that page. Unless to type a different URL in the box.. Any ideas? Baring in mind I find it difficult to even find the settings on this stupid invention!!

The default colours, text etc. for any program window is given by the Windows theme; this can be changed by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting the Personalise option (just as in previous versions of Windows).

But a browser can also be set to use a theme all of its own. You'll need to specify which browser (and version) is being used and that information will also allow help to be given for the basics of using it.
I know little about Windows 8 (except that I'd rather avoid it!). However, since you've not stated otherwise, I assume that you must be using Internet Explorer 11 (since that's what's bundled with IE8). The obvious solution would seem to be to use a decent browser instead. Almost anything is vastly better than Internet Explorer but most people around here (including me) use Firefox:

Ruddy 'eck! I've only had a couple of sips of wine, honest! That should, of course, read "since that's what's bundled with Windows 8"
Try the free download Classic Shell. See demonstrations on youtube first. Might make the laptop easier to use.
