Logging Into Your Own Laptop With Remote Access

What is the best way to do this?
can this be done even if the laptop is switched off? I am assuming not but can it?
I would like to be able to access stuff from all my computers on my others - i know of logmein - i have signed up but not used it yet
but i wondered if anyone could recommend the simplest and best way to just access everything on my laptop, and how ?
I have thought about using the cloud but i have so much stuff, id need to remember to put it in the cloud all the time and just doesnt happen
