How does one work out the consumption of electrical goods?
for example
8 channel DVR recorder
4 dvr cameras
What would be the hourly consumption ?

Is it rue that if you have DVD recorder you should keep it on standby and if so what is the reason

You need too know the Wattage of an appliance and this is normally labelled somewhere on the item concerned. |It is then a matter of doing a relatively simple mathematical calculation. The following should be of assistance to you. :- http://www.ukpower.co.uk/tools/running_costs_electricity/#.U7VoSEAtr4Y Hans.

You can get plug-ins that monitor the power you take from the mains.

Aside from that most electrical goods should tell you what power they are rated at. Multiply by an hour to get w/hr.

Normally the reason for keeping a DVD recorder in 'Standby' is to ensure that the clock is permanently set to the correct time. Nothing to say that you can't turn off.
