Is there a device that can be inserted into a port in the back of a Samsung Smart Television which would record programmes?

Erm, yes.

they are called DVD/HDD recorders.

It can be done by recording to a USB stick but some users have found that the the tv can be choosy about which make of stick you use. A more reliable way is to record to a portable hard drive.
