Why do some websites not need the www at the start of the address?

None does really.....never used it at all.

How about WWW.answerbank.co.uk?
try putting answerbank.co.uk in your browser on a new tab, and see what happens

Yes you don't always have to type the www in to get to the website, but it still appears when the page loads - answerbank still appears as www.answerbank.co.uk. some websites appear as http://website.name without the www which is what I am referring to
