Are there apps to download to protect Android phones from viruses and malware? Any recommendations?

Yes there are. I`ve got AVG on mine (free app) Seems to be OK

There are a small number of Anti Virus programmes for Android but it is unlikely that you will better AVG: which you can download from :-

I like avast. the anti theft protection is a good feature.
