External Mic Problem

I have a camcorder with an external mic socket. Recently, when recording with the external mic, the playback is hissy and crackly. Really bad. I sprayed it with compressed air to see if it was dusty but no better. The rest of the camera is okay. Any ideas what can cause this problem and what I can do? I've tried swapping the mic, head cleaning etc
