What does the cloths peg like thing measure that the doctor or nurse puts on your finger and then numbers come up on a little monitor?

It measures oxygen saturation in the blood. Should be as close to 100% as possible.
...and, did you know, that you can buy your very own pulse ox in Lidl at the moment....£19.99. Quite what you do with the results at home is a puzzle!

in air 21% anything above 97% is OK


I must go down to Lidl - thanks - In chronic lung disease (wh I have) it is quite useful to show disease progression - or that you have got acutely worse. Measure and remeasure after going up a flight of stairs.
used is assessing severity of chest infection in children
