XBox Multiplayer System Link: Problems

I'm having problems linking 2 XBox consoles in that I can't get the games to play.  The consoles are linked via the correct cable(basically a standard ethernet cable) but nothing is happening.

Is it correct to assume that I need 2 copies of the same game?  Seems a bit of a waste if this is the case, may as well play the split screen option!

Is there something else I need to do in the Settings menu to make the two compatible?

ANY info at all is greatly appreciated.

yes,you need 2 copies of the game ! i always think its a shame you cant use one xbox on more than 1 tv but i guess for system link they assume you'll play against friends who also have the game.
