Yes, know it's ancient but it's been a good "stand-by" spare phone for a few years now.
I've always kept it charged up and the PAYG Sim topped up. Last week it didn't want to respond to the charger (although the charger worked perfectly OK with my wife's Nokia) so I assumed that the battery had died. I invested a very modest sum in a new battery but this also failed to respond to the charger.
Is there anything I could / should do to get this phone working again - or should I just abandon it altogether and splash out on a new phone?

What crosses my mind is that the common part of the problem (aside from the charger itself) is the handset. I'm assuming you don't remove the batteries to charge it. So my suspicion if a phone fault. But why not let a mobile shop take a look and give an opinion ?

Even better, if you know someone with a model that takes the same batteries you could try charging/using them on it to see if the batteries are fine.

Thanks for your comments, OG.
The Nokia 5110 is a pretty ancient model with the battery actually forming the back of the phone. Thus you are correct in your assumption that the battery isn't removed when it's on charge.
Good point about swapping batteries with someone with a similar model but as it's so ancient, I don't know anyone with a similar model!
Furthermore, I'm pretty sure that the phone isn't worth what a mobile shop would want to charge to look at it.
I think, reading my own comments, that I've come to the conclusion that my trusty old phone is finally nacked and it's time to pay a visit to a local supermarket and lay out a tenner!
(Unless anyone can tell me how to dismantle the thing so that I can check circuits and get to work with a soldering iron.)
These days soldering irons can be a bit of a problem as it's all chips. If you are to sling it anyway can't hurt to try to break in and see if anything obvious is amiss.
