Hi there, I've never dared to go there although it would seem to be a good way to keep in touch

top right on the blue toolbar click the little padlock and change it to close friends only

Is it moderated even if you do that
moderated? by who? you control it with those settings.
Go into your profile, sloopy, and tick every box you can find to keep your access as limited as possible. Don't accept invitations to be friends from people you don't want to see your every posting.
I haven't got a "padlock on a blue toolbar", dotty
This is the internet, there isn't any privacy.
Maybe some of the techs on here can help, perhaps repost it in Technology?

thanks boxy

right dotty, got that
Dot FB employs page administrators who can use moderation block list tools.
You can't lock it down, anyone can see your basic profile, but you control (by making sure you check all the boxes you need to) who can correspond with you and see your postings.
Get it nice & tight and then get someone who isn't friends with you on FB to have a good nosy around and see what they can see of your profile.

Or you could even do what I've done and set up a second account (completely freestanding and unconnected) purely for the purpose of occasionally logging in and having a look to see what the world can see of your main account.

And don't assume that once it's all nice and tight that it will stay that way - FB are buggers for moving the goalposts and changing default permissions. Check it regularly.
Hear hear, s-d - every so often, they move stuff around and you have to go in and reset your own settings.
You can set permissions so that your profile is harder to find by random people searching - some people on here have done that quite successfully recently.
top right you have your name, find friends and home in white on blue and then a little wjite padlock icon and then a little wheel icon

oo gaawd.....

Nope dotty, next to the white find friends, I have two navy people, a message icon, and a globe which lights up when I have a new alert, then a dropdown menu to log out.
I thought the whole idea of Facebook is so everyone can "like" what you're doing and having for dinner?
That's now on Twatter Elvis :)
..which is another reason why I don't witter on Twitter............ what's the point of it?
