I'm trying to hook up my laptop with a projector with an s-video lead.  I'm not having much luck i.e. no sound/picture, and I was wondering if I need any software.

Can anyone help?

Don't know if S-Video carries sound (never used it), but you may need to go to Control Panel> Display> Settings> Advanced. This will normally give you various dsiplay options, including setting up multiple monitors. Depending on your laptop, you may have a more direct way of doing this via a specialised program for whatever display chip is in the machine. There is usually a Fn+F# combo that accesses the multiple monitor function, too.

If S-Video is picture-only, you will need to add a lead from your computer's headphone/speaker socket to your projector.
