Is it possible to change the names of a load of files at once in number format. For example I've got a lot of pictures from different cameras/phones etc. and would like to number them simply from 1-150 or whatever amount there are. I am using Windows Vista.

mmmm, interesting, I don't think so but maybe!
I've got a photo converter that lets you do this without actually altering the files, it's a free download. You can download it here.

You can do this with windows 7 but I've never used Vista so don't know if it would work.
Select all the files you want to number.
Right click and select rename.
Type in a name e.g. Test.
Press return and the files are renamed in the format Test (1), Test (2) etc.
Oh I didn't know that- that sounds simpler chrisgel :)
I've just tried it in vista ultimate and it works beautifully:)

chrisgel, thanks that does work to an extent and unless I find an alternative then it will probably suffice. However, if there was a way to number them in a batch from 001....150 that would be better.

Thanks again.
flob: new QOTSA beginning of June. Email me if you want the mp3 of the first release.
Flobadob - I've just been playing about with this. If you put a space and then press return you get (1), (2) etc.
Don't know about getting rid of the brackets yet but I'll keep trying.
If you download the little file below and put it in the same folder as your pictures and then double click in then all the .JPG files in the folder will be renamed with sequential numbers.

Although the files are now renamed {space} (1) etc. they still sort as if they were 1, 2 etc
There are plenty of file name changing apps out there. I've used one called 'Magic File Renamer' in the past.
Just tried this on XP and it works fine. You learn a new thing everyday!!
I too tried it with Vista and it also worked, except for the first picture which remained 'TEST' and all the others Test (1) Test (2) etc, etc.
Try Faststone Image Viewer, you can batch rename your files to any name sequence that you want.

Also it will display virtually any type of image file that you throw at it, including RAWs

Brilliant piece of software and best of all its free.
