I thought I was helping but it turns out it has not helped a difficult situation - I dont think it has made it any worse. I genuinely thought I was solving a problem. Its one of those dammed if you do situations - never mind

Basically I rang someone to ask them something and it prompted me to make another call to arrange a meeting (which I then arranged) only to be told this meeting was not desired - I cannot really say anymore except that I work for a local council and I may have upset a gold chained person

You did what you thought was the right thing to do at that time. Don't dwell on the negative reaction you got, console yourself with you still have a job. And you'd learn from this experience.
