Forgive me, I'm hopeless with technology. Please explain what an iPad microcard is and does, what info does it contain, and how much do they cost (even roughly)?

It's a SIM card that is used just for iPad to allow 3 & 4g connectivity. No dea of prices etc but you'll need to conact a mobile phone company (Orange, Vodaphone etc) to get one.

I pay about £5 a month for 500 mb of data which I find is plenty. You can also cancel at any time.

You can get a Samba micro SIM card for £5. You watch or not, ads on your IPad or on your PC and get 3.5mbs per ad. I don't tend to watch them, just let it play, then do the same with another. The MBs don't run out after a month either. You can also pay for mbs if you wish which do run out after a month.
