My printer clearly needs some toner cartridges replacing.

My old printer used to tell me which colour needed replacing but I've had no message on my computer and the printers display isn't giving much away.

I have a bundle of cartridges is it a case of replacing all rather than just the ones that are empty?

Based upon what evidence? Have you produced a print quality diagnostic report? Have you cleaned the print heads? Scroll down to 'Soution six':

The evidence is that over a period of time the print quality has diminished to the point that today I cannot print a B&W document. I have now replaced the black cartridge and can once again print in B&W.

Thank you for the link. I shall poke around on the HP website to see if I can get alerts displayed on my computer and on the printers display as I'm sure I've had with this printer in the past and definitely with my previous model.

The usual route for accessing the print driver panel (irrespective of the make of printer) is to go to Settings > Printers and Faxes (or something similar, depending upon which version of Windows you're running), RIGHT-click on the icon for your printer and select 'Properties'. That should offer you plenty of options to play with.
