Got a BT man coming this morning to install a telephone line so I can enter the technological world proper, and have broadband connection. I need to be in Stamford this afternoon - any idea how long all the above should take him?

Been to long to recall for sure, but not long. Much of the connection is outside anyway. Inside they just need to run the wire to the main box they screw to the wall. I'd guess an hour max, probably less than that. But maybe others have recent experience.

Thank you x. I should easily make Stamford in time then, Goodo x
Do you not already have a telephone line connected to your property ? Almost 100% of British houses have a telephone line these days, even if its not working at present. Are you perhaps changing from one provider of a telephone service to another ?

If you DO NOT have a working line connected to your house, than that would need to be installed, probably by a thin cable coming from the nearest telephone pole, or by a underground feed, if your house is more modern.

In either case, my experience as a BT Engineer of may years standing
( although retired now ! ) tells me that they whole process may take a while, as connections would need to be made in the local Telephone Exchange as well.

Let us know here on AB how you got on today !

I think there's already a line there, it's just the Internet thingy that's being hooked up (you may guess I'm not very techno savvy!!). The house is only about 15 years old, so I assume it has a line there, all the outside wires are there....
If you already have a telephone in your property and a chap is only coming to fix up Broadband connections to your computer. It shouldn't take him very long to put in an extension socket (if one is required)and connect a router to your computer.

Alston is right, although there is still some small amount of work needed in the Exchange to get the Broadband to work. If its a BT Broadband connection that you are having, than you should up and running pretty soon.

Welcome to the World Wide Web, and the 21st century !

By the way, if you haven't got a internet connection yet, how are you appearing here on AB ?

I'm guessing maybe a friends internet, or from a mobile device or a work PC or a library PC.....
If they are coming to install broadband (router and line?) it should take about an hour, no longer unless the engineer takes a shine to you ;)

I have one of these new tangled I-pads with built in whatsit, but the reception is not good. Anyway, BT man been and gone, he was only 20 minutes. He's left me with a cd disc, but where the hell do input that, only having an I-pad? I have a password also.
Try this :::

Open the ipad where it says "Wifi connections" The ipad should search and find your lovely new broadband connection ! Input the password in the appropriate place and you should be up and running !

I don't have an ipad, just a Samsung Galaxy TAB 2, so somebody with an ipad might need to give you further instructions, as Apple products seem to work differently to the rest of the world. I guess that what you are paying all that extra money for when you buy an ipad.

Failing that, just grab a 10 year old nephew, grandson, etc. The kids today come already hardwired for new technology.....there will a blur of grubby little fingers and it will be all be done in no time.
