legal music downloading

can anyone suggest some good legal downloading sites with a lot of choice?  i used to use winmx but i've decided to go on the straight and narrow for once lol!  preferably british sites, with monthly/yearly payments?  all answers welcome though please :D

also, what are the current uk laws on downloading music? any links? i've tried and failed to find any solid information

I think I paid about �25.00 for the lifetime, unlimited download package including security.  It has provided me with hours and hours of music downloads, pictures and movies, the music seems to download pretty fast as long as there are many sources, but the movies are VERY SLOW, but I tend to only want music anyway.

Make sure you read all the small print and make sure that you have good internet security, because this is a file sharing site. (there is always someone out there who seems to enjoy making others suffer), if you go for this let us know how you get on.  I also tried Kaza Gold and got well bitten by viruses I can tell you!  Keep Clear Good Luck

I've only ever used iTunes, great range, PC or Mac, no problems.

Just another illegal file-sharing site then, but one that you have to pay for the privilege of breaking the law and downloading all the virii and crapware contained on 30,000,000 other PCs across the world.

This is probably the cheapest site for downloading music safely and legally but it's not British, if such a thing exists.

You could also try this, totally free but not many popular artists, I use it no problems.
