What's the name of the key on the standard keyboard on a personal computer next to the number [1/!] and above the tab?

``   are the symobls it produces.  There is also a broken line, how do I get to use that?

Someone suggested this is referred to as the 'console' key.

Thanks.

 = not

 = broken bar (press Ctrl+Alt+key)

forgot to define ` = grave accent
On American keyboards, this key has the ~ sign, which is the tilde. In many games, this key opens the developer console in games, hence the console key.

Thanks!
Tild key
Instead of the three key combination that kempie gave for the character, you can get it by using the two key combination of the other alt key to the right of the spacebar.  Just press (alt gr + key).  This also works for the euro symbol on the 4 key.

used to mean 'pipe' (send to) command in DOS, good grief, how old am I?

PS. gen2, Thanks for the tip on the euro, I've been typing in control 1658 or sum such rubbish!

| is a pipe now. used to be a pipe I think. Who changed it? It's a conspiracy I tell you! Won't be able to type colour next!

Gamers would call it the console key, because when you press it during some games, it brings up a console where you can enter commands, change settings, etc.

I always though it was called tilde, but now I'm looking at my keyboard, my tilde ~ is actually next to the return key!
