I'm thinking of buying a wireless internet compatible laptop, the built in modem on the laptop is 56k, I've been told if I buy a wireless router that I will be able to use the same internet that I use on my home PC which is broadband. Will this be at broadband speed though or 56k on the laptop?

What you will need apart from a wireless router, is a network card for your PC, if it doesn't already have one built in and a wireless card for your laptop.

By the sound of it your laptop will not have built in wireless capability.

For security, it is best to enable encryption for your wireless connection to stop people eavesdropping/using your wireless network.

Your laptop will be using the broadband connection, so will be much faster than the built in modem.

I use a USB wireless connection for my laptop. If the main PC is being used at the same time the wireless connection can be slow, but it is certainly faster than dial-up.
The 56k modem you refer to is not wireless, it's the "old fashioned" dial-up type (that didn't sound snobbish at all!). It is possible that your new laptop will have wireless networking built in, a lot of the new ones do now. What you need to look for in the spec is something like: Wifi or IEEE 802.11b or 802.54g. It may just have 54g wireless networking and you're mixing it up with 56k.
If you don't have wireless networking on board, then you'll need something like the USB wireless network adaptor PhilD refers to above. You can frequently buy a USB adaptor and wireless router as a package and save some cash.
