This maybe should have gone in films but anyway, I have recently been given a copy of the above for a birthday present and while watching it I seem to be seeing little bits of scenes that are not in the dvd extended edition is this possible? or is it because what I am seeing is just clearer? anyone any thoughts?

I've had this debate with people before! For LOTR 1, the DVD extended has a runtime of 208 mins, and the BluRay is 228 mins ... but the DVD had an extra 20 mins of 'fan club' credits not listed as part of the running time. So, they are identical, you're just seeing more detail on BluRay :-)
The durations i have for the DVD Special Extended Editions v Blu-Ray Extende editions are:

LOTR1 219m v 228m
LOTR2 225m v 235m
LOTR3 252m v 263m

But with various other films I usually find the the Blu-Ray release displays as being about 4 minutes longer than the DVD release even though it's the same version, so since each of the LOTR films is split over 2 discs that would account for at least 8 minutes difference in runtime.

I've just finished watching the Lord of the rings on Blu-ray extended edition. You need to check this https://www.bikerringshop.com/collections/tiger-rings that promotes your ring design. The version I watched was the best version available, but when I looked into the extras fans have been able to get their hands on, it became clear that Warner Brothers has the most impressive bonus features.
