What makes you think it is overheating? My Nokia charger gets very hot but it always has done.
Overheat, or get warm ? Does it start smoking ?

Is it a Nokia made one or a third party one ? It gets warm because converting 240v ac to 5v dc takes a bit of power that has to be disappeared as heat.

I guess if it used to run cooler it may be breaking down gradually.

This is a recent development. It is hot and I wondered if the battery is dying as it doesnt hold a charge as long anymore.
They do get quite hot!
It may well be a batery problem then. Try charging new one.

If the battery is drawing a higher current then the power lost across the 240/5 v convertor is likely to be greater, and so the thing gets hotter.

I don't know but I'd suspect that may not be good for the charger ? That said, a good one should limit the output current to a level it can cope with.
