I am building my own computer and struggling to make it work

Ubuntu was running on an SSD but that seemed to get corrupted so I reloaded Ubuntu onto the mechanical drive and somethings work. Disk utility reports that the SSD fails with bad sectors. I cannot install AVG Free for linux and GIMP (photo sw) also had errors installing although it sort of works.
The BIOS refuses to recognise both drives together although Ubunto does. On start up BIOS reports if finds no device but goes onto load Ubuntu
MY processor is AMD 3870 and the mother board is Asus F1A75-V Pro
