netflix screen too narrow on TV.

Have signed up to netflix, all old films but save going to blockbusters in the rain.
the films that are recorded in wide screen ( which is nearly all of them) finish up as a narrow band in the middle of the screen, probably one third of the screen. so we are watching a long strip of tv, not very good. I have tried adjusting the TV setting but that makes no difference. The signal is coming into my computer then down a lead to the TV. is there anything I can do or is this normal?
