Is the router definitely a wireless one, or just an Ethernet one?

Does your computer actually have wi-fi built in (or an wi-fi dongle)?

Have you searched for the signal and logged onto the network?

More information is needed before we can help!

Does your pc have a wifi adapter? Has it ever connected to the internet via wifi?

What OS are you using? Windows, Mac? XP, Vista, Windows 7?

wireless

wifi

Okay, your pc is not wifi enabled - I expected this when you said it is a XP desktop. They usually aren't.

All is not lost - you can buy a wifi adapter for your pc very cheaply, but bear in mind that if your router is close to your desktop your connection will be much more secure and faster than using wireless.

Lots of places sell them - pc world and independent pc shops, or online such as eBay or Amazon.
This is the sort of thing:

Ah. Go in to Control Panel, network and internet and (racking my brains - long time since I used XP) try the internet or network wizard, although it does seem as if you don't have a wifi card installed.
