Is MSN Spaces different to MSN Member Directory?

I recently created a MSN Space and I've received messages from other members but cannot reply. When I go to look for their sites, it says they don't exist. Instead I get asked to join the MSN Member Directory. Is this a separate thing? I've tried to contact MSN several times but have had no response. But my site must be up and running since I am getting messages from other users. I'm confused!!! LOL! Any ideas?
