I was wondering if a 1.1 GHZ laptop computer would be suitable for a student's needs and what a computer with more GHZ could do than one with less?

Hi. I'm using a 1.1 HP laptop in work as a leisure machine and find it more than adequate - plays DVDs, copies DVDs, CDs, plays music - handles Microsoft office 2003 without any problems, and the graphics card copes with Photoshop very well, and majority of the games - tho' I dont bother too much with them. I'm not connected to the internet with it, but it has the capability. Only benefit from a larger processor would be faster handling of graphics - but not noticably so.

Best of luck with whatever you get.

A faster processor won't do more, it will just do it quicker. 1 gig is more than enough for surfing, emailing, word processing etc.

You may struggle a bit with large video or picture files, or the latest games, but generally I would say this type of PC is good value. Remember, this would have been top of the range just a few years ago.
