The internet was invented in 1989 at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee, a physicist and computer scientist
Depends on what you call the invention of the internet.

It was initially based around the US military network ARPANET (and a few other early packet switchng networks)

The WWW as we know it would be down to a English bloke called Tim Berners-Lee who first used the HTTP protocol while working at CERN.

Loads more info on wikipedia so have a read...

Sorry, I should have added that CERN is in Switzerland, just outside Geneva
Maybe it was invented in cyberspace?
I rememeber reading it started in the 1970s and was used by the miltary as a sort of intranet. Perhaps it was in the USA
This is from memory so corrections welcome! The internet more than just websites, its used to describe a whole plethora of 'online' services such as email, bulletin boards etc.

In the 1960s universities in the USA developed a system of sharing information between computers via phone lines. This was obviously a closed network, but a network nonetheless.
When Tim Berners-Lee worked at CERN in Switzerland he developed the scripting language HTML, this enabled websites to be created and shared across multiple platforms (windows, mac, UNIX etc) as it was designed to be generic. This is what really kicked off the internet as we know it. I think this was back in 1992.
sorry, to clarify the www became available to the 'outside world' in 1992.

No it wasn't.

Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web and web browers that sit ON TOP on the network of computers called the internet (that already existed).

The internet was in existence long before Tim Berners Lee invnted his part of it.

Best way to think of it is the World Wide Web could not exist without the internet, but the internet could (and did) exist without the World Wide Web.
Note that while we all use the term "internet" and "world wide web" interchangably, they are in fact different.

The "internet" consists of thousands of computers connected together all "talking" to each other and sharing information. This has been around since about the 1950s in various forms (and with various names).

For example email could be sent over the internet long before Tim Berners Lee came along

What Tim Berners Lee invented was what became known as the "World Wide Web" (www).

Amongst his inventions were:

Web Browers
The HTML language that is used to build web pages.
The URL (the "address" of every web site)
Web Servers that host web sites.

All of these things collectively became the World Wide Web, but Tim Berners Lee could not have done it if the internet had not already existed to build his technology of top of.
> Note that while we all use the term "internet" and "world wide web" interchangeably

Not all, by any means!
