Slowest Broadband in the world

Been with BT a couple of months, every fine until last week. Broadband kept dropping. Spoke to them on Saturday, problem fixed. But since then the internet has been really slow and BT Vision isn't working because of that.
Just spoke to BT who informed me that whilst I should be getting a speed of 10mb, it's currently running at 160kb. If I understood him correcting, there is 1000kb in 1mb, so my broadband is barely running at all.
He's done some line tests but nothing came up so I have to wait for an engineer to call tomorrow.
What's the most likely reason it's suddenly running so slowly?
We only have one socket in the house and nothing has been touched that could have messed it up.
