I have to transfer a lot of photos etc from my old phone to my PC. The Carphone Warehouse tried to sell me a Bluetooth dongle for 50- but I would rather get one off Ebay! However, I don't want to buy the wrong thing. Are all dongles generic? Are they leadless, or do I need to buy a specific type? Do they need a battery? (Phone is Nokia 3650). Any info very gratefully received!!

I don't know if they actuall told you, but you don't actually need a blootooth dongle to do this. You can buy a data cable for under a tenner brand new on E Bay, with a cd to set up on your computer. It does the same job.

yes they did mention that, but I have just bought a new phone (hence having to transfer the old photos) and I would apparently have to buy a new lead for each phone. With Bluetooth I can buy it now and use it with all phones. I think!!!
Only if both the phones are blue-tooth enabled. For instance, very few Samsung models have bluetooth.
Or if both phones are infra red enabled, you could transfer from old phone to new phone, buy a data cable for your new phone and you're all set to go.

Both the phones are bluetooth enabled. My computer is not infra red enabled though. So basically I need to know what to buy! Do i really have to spend 50 or can I get it off Ebay?!
You can get one off Ebay, they're pretty generic. Bluetooth is a standard and so should be the same regardless of manufacturer. One company produces most of the electronics so they're all likely to be the same dongle with a different name on it.
amazon  16.99
The idea with the infared was to transfer direct from phone to phone rather than via the computer.

Yes I see. I don't really want to clog my new phone up with 16MB of old photos though! Steveho, please could you give me the link to that Amazon product?
If both are Blootooth enabled and you're not planning on putting the items onto your computer, all you have to do is pair the phones up and send the items to the receiving phone via blootooth, hence spending no money at all.
would cost at the most about 10 inc p&p on eBay, should be compliant with the Bluetooth V1.1 specification Class 2 operation, but this is part of the bluetooth standard so should be no problems...
