HDTV sound distortion.

The sound is (fairly regularly) coming out of my hdtv distorted and crackly, with an echo, when i'm viewing with an hdmi cable connected to my laptop or xbox360. It doesn't happing when watching the built-in freeview. Mute/unmute doesn't fix it, whereas turning the tv off and on again does. I've tried two different hdmi cables now, each connected to the four different inputs on the tv and nothing changes. My tv's the problem, isn't it? Any suggestions other than "buy a new tv" greatly appreciated ;)
