I've gone back to my five year old battered laptop with the keys erased and some keys missing, it's slow and freezes but it still will let google search for anything and i can see you tube links and sign into you tube, I'm completely bemused as to how an internet search engine like IE or firefox is not able to search the internet

Neither IE nor Firefox is an Internet Search Engine. They are web browsers.
Know what you mean dotty, I was wondering how much my front room window would cost to replace when I've chucked mine. It's been going really slowly and IE is not responding for ages. Commiserations.

google and yahoo won't find anything either they all time out, so whatever they are called they are not working either

i don't understand it gran, there has to be a reason that all those things are just failing on me!
Mine just stopped working, spent half the afternoon on the phone to the ISP to find out what was wrong, you know the 1,2, 4, 6 options, then get through to be told you need another number, dial that, get a guy in some foreign land, then had to go through endless permutations to get the router working again, for fecks sake.
It's an infected hosts file..
