I have Windows XP, and lately, when I run film clips, the visual appears to be jumping one frame at a trime, occasionally freezing and jumping, while the sound runs as normal.

I have run all my scanners and checks - nothing nasty lurking - can anyone advise please?

Well it's usually system memory/resources available .. or the graphics drivers.
You say lately which implies that video used to run ok.

First update graphics drivers

Next could be a memory hog, check whats also running using the Task Manager

Have you tried playing the vids on a differnt application, try a free player like
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

If it plays ok on that then either reinstall the other player to see if it helps or keep using VLN player
