security padlock

I recently updated Firefox (4.00 I think it was) now when I go to log onto my bank, Santander, there isn't a little padlock, which worries me, so I log onto Internet Explorer and it is there in the address bar. Anyone else noticed this please, and know any reason for it. Is I.E. any better than it used to be I always had problems with it in the past? TIA rosy
