Latest version of Google Earth. Has it been "improved"?

I reinstalled GE yesterday after I mysteriously lost my the desktop icon. I have finally got it going again - and put the icon back - but I now don't appear to be able to get the camera icons that previously ran at very close intervals along the roads. Instead I seem to have the Pegman thingy which I have to drag to the area that I want to see. Is there any way I can get the cameras back or is this new Pegman feature a permanent improvement?
