We are with Sky and have been for over 16 years. We pay roughly £40 a month including the free broadband, calls and Sky +. For months now a lot of what we record is unwatchable and sometimes the channels are too. I have phoned them a few times now and they do all kinds of things that dont work so now the final step is to call out an engineer which we have to pay for. First I was quoted £60 then it was reduced to £40. I know several people who have threatened to cancel and then they have had it done free but dont know if I dare do that! We have been looking at Virgin media but dont really know if that compares to Sky. What do others think?

It may be that your Sky + Box is faulty tigwig, hence the poor quality of recordings.
Are the Pics you receive and watch normally OK ?
We've had Virgin for years now, and wouldn't think of changing.

You need to have cable, of course - check their website, punch in your postcode, and they'll tell you.

Being cable, quality is superb, also broadband is umpteen times faster.

We have the V+ box, which can record 2 programs at once while watching another. Recording quality is superb.

The service is first class. We've never been charged, and the usual response to a problem is to replace the piece of equipment with a new one.
If you were to compare the two systems working properly then i think Sky would win and all reviews ive read about the two say the same. Sky has more content than Virgin and the Sky box is better.
Thats not to say that Virgin is rubbish, it isnt and is fast catching up to Sky and i think can actually beat Sky at the moment with its back catalogue of programs / films etc. Ive had both systems and couldnt really fault either but given the choice id plump for Sky even though im not a fan of their monopoly that they have over our media etc.
Its a tricky one !
Had both, would never have either again. Ever. Even if they were the only options.
I may be wrong but doesnt Sky own Virgin Media?
I've had sky+ for years, barely a murmur. Sounds like your box is cream crackered.
my parents swapped from sky to virgin, lured over by a cheaper deal, 6 months later they hate it

Well it turns out that we are stuck with Sky anyway. Virgin do not do tv in my area despite posting me a leaflet telling me about their fantastic bundles a few weeks back. OH has phoned Sky as it still isnt working properly and they refuse to budge on sending out an engineer for free even though he threatened to cancel. So its pay the £40 or nothing grrrrr.
I was with Sky for years until this gov made both wage earners ( public sector) redundant.
Gave notice to Sky & now watching Freesat using Sky+HD box, so getting HD & normal TV for nowt, BRILL.Ron.
Have you looked at BT Vision we have not had any problems with it.
To be honest Virgin isnt much better(IMO)...I'm having the same problems as you and Virgin have one of the worst customer services I have ever known. I would change to Sky if I could but our building is not allowed a Sky dish on it :(
One thing with Virgin. You don't own the Virgin box. So if there is a fault then they fix it or replace it for no charge.

Also the Virgin box is better than Sky. You can record two channels and watch a third but the Sky box you can only record two channels but not watch a third. After a year with Sky if the box goes wrong it is your problem not Sky's
Stoofur, do you mean as well as recording the two programmes you can watch another real time program as well? Or do you mean record two programmes and watch a Pre-recorded programme back? If the latter then Sky can do that as well, so no difference then.
have any trees grown or branched out near your dish in the past few months ?
Question Author
No trees or anything near the dish no.
As far as I'm aware with Virgin yes you can record 2 things and watch a 3rd which is better than Sky but we cant get virgin tv now.
You can record two programmes and watch a third live programme or recorded programme.
Yes, that did surprise me, i went onto the Virgin site to see and it is indeed correct!
You learn something new everyday they say!
