It's all plugged in with a Parallel to USB lead, how do I get the PC to recognise there's a printer there? Would it be best to assign one particular USB socket as the one for it?

It won't recognise the printer, you need to tell the computer the printer is there.

firstly install the drivers for the USB to parallel adaptor, then install the driver software for the printer, hopefully it will scan for printer ports during the install an detect the correct one.

if not then gonna need more info, i.e. what version of windows and what make and model of printer.
Maplin sell something that seems to be what you may need. Part Number is A94BF. This comes with the necessary software.
